Ashley and Emmett’s fun, authentic engagement session
I’ve known and loved Ashley and Emmett for a long time, and today I get to share their engagement photos with you!
Back in college, my partner Tyler introduced me to his good friend Emmett, and we’ve loved spending time together with him and his partner Ashley ever since. (They actually came to our wedding six years ago!)
Ashley and Emmett live in New York now and often come back to the Midwest in the summertime to visit their friends and family. I was so excited when they asked me to be their wedding photographer -- they’ll be getting married in New York in the summer of 2022, and I can’t WAIT to photograph it! They recently took a trip to Minnesota, and we decided to spend a morning together taking engagement photos while they were in town.

When we were planning their engagement session, Ashley and Emmett said that they wanted their engagement pictures to feel like they captured a slice of their relationship and to feel romantic, fun, and true to them. They had a vision of having some photos that felt more adventurous and fun, paired with other pictures that felt more chill and relaxed. I think these vibes pair so well together and really show the different dynamics they enjoy together as a couple!
Ashley and Emmett love being outdoors; they got engaged while hiking up a mountain, and their wedding will be at a flower farm. They were excited to incorporate their love of nature into their engagement photos -- Ashley had a vision of doing some of their engagement photos in a field of flowers. With this in mind, we started off the day at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, where I knew there would be some beautiful flowers ready and blooming!
Ashley and Emmett also love going out, exploring restaurants and bars, and eating good food together! They wanted to take some pictures that would capture the fun, lively side of their relationship. We decided to visit a brewery to capture that adventurous, cool vibe that feels really storytelling and true to them, so we headed to Urban Growler Brewing Company to take a few pictures after spending time at the Arboretum!

When we arrived at the Arboretum, we found a gorgeous field of flowers that was full of blooming lupines in white and yellow. There were even some orange butterflies flapping around -- it was so magical! I love the photos from this part of the day. They feel so full of life and joyful.
I love that Ashley and Emmett chose to get a little bit dressed up, too! I love the balance between the natural setting and their elegant vibe - it feels really striking and cool, and looks really great in the field!.
We also went to the rose gardens in the Arboretum. The roses were blooming in these beautiful shades of pink, and the pictures that came from this location were so sweet and happy.
Engagement portraits at Urban Growler Brewing Company
Urban Growler Brewing Company is an awesome woman- and queer-owned brewery in St. Paul! They have a great patio as well as some cool architecture. We grabbed some photos of Ashley and Emmett sitting at the bar and chatting, then took some more portraits outside on the patio.
The photos at the end are some of my favorites -- it feels like you’re tagging along with Ashley and Emmett on a really fun date!
