Michelle and Tim's Winter Engagement Photos in the North Loop

For Michelle and Tim the North Loop is home: it’s full of their favorite places, great memories and so much of their love story. So when we planned their engagement session, it was a natural fit to choose the place where they live (and where Tim proposed) in their corner of the North Loop.

To create that amazing sense of place that was so important to Michelle and Tim, I made sure to highlight the North Loop’s iconic brick, amazing architecture and industrial-modern feel in their photographs.

Sometimes people worry that winter engagement sessions will look sterile or cold without any greenery or trees, but we made sure to keep these comfortable and natural by incorporating lots of the warm-toned brick and by finding warm light and winter greenery to give photos a bit of texture. I also love that Michelle and Tim chose these cozy flannels and coats for the first part of the session, it’s just so classically Minneapolis in winter and a great representation of their real life together.

Since the first part of their session was right around their home, they also took a few photos with their beloved dogs, Lando and Opal. (Fun fact: for Michelle and Tim’s wedding, gift bags included cookies decorated with Lando and Opal’s faces! It was such a fun personal detail.)

I love having pets included in engagement sessions, it’s such a lovely, authentic way to capture your everyday life. When we chatted about incorporating Lando and Opal, I shared my favorite tips for awesome portraits with pets, and asked what kind of pictures were important to Michelle and Tim to have with their dogs: more posed portrait? Casual candids? They were most interested in capturing the sweet relationship they have with their pets and I love these photos of them snuggling together.

After a little chapter in their session with the dogs, Michelle, Tim and I headed to The Freehouse, where the couple had their very first date. It was so sweet to hear them tell the story of when they met, and when the manager overheard that they met at the Freehouse and were getting married he was truly thrilled and sent over some fun drinks and snacks. It was such a happy, romantic moment and Michelle and Tim felt so celebrated (thanks Freehouse!)

For the final photos, Michelle and Tim changed into their date-night outfits for a different look. I love this one of the two of them in front of the cool, textured wall where Tim proposed! The story of their proposal is amazing, check out the post about their wedding to read it.

Michelle and Tim, thank you for sharing your life and your stories with me. I loved relearning the North Loop through your eyes during your engagement session and your wedding, and I wish you endless happy adventures with Lando and Opal in tow!
