Folk band portraits (inspired by Minneapolis creative wedding party photos)
I was psyched when my dear friends from the indie-folk band Muus asked me to take some photographs of them. We spent an afternoon wandering around the north loop, capturing a mix of atmospheric moments, relaxed candids, and smiling portraits. As I was going through the images and editing them later, I realized that I had approached this session the same way that I approach working with a bridesmaids/groomsmen when I’m planning creative wedding party photos.
How were these pictures similar to creative wedding party photos?
When I’m shooting weddings and planning creative wedding party photos, (especially with couples who are psyched about their community and capturing portraits of them with their closest friends), I’ll do a lot of the same things. My goal is to find interesting places to frame a photograph, give groups some direction without making them feel over-posed, and strive for a variety of beautiful/interesting/candid images.
In either case, I’m creating pictures that are a little bit cool, a little bit epic, that capture everyone looking beautiful without looking like they were trying to look beautiful… and more than anything, documenting a community in a particular moment in time, full of emotions
